Family Activity: Teach Kids to Take Photos

If your kids are like mine then they love taking photos with your I-phone. I decided not to fight this but instead make it an activity for us to enjoy together as a family only for Neva, that meant using my big girl camera (aka my DSLR). What happened was me realizing Neva has some natural talent for not only composition but also direction.

Show them how to use the camera:

If they are just using your I-phone chances are they already know how to use it better than you but it you are having them use a different camera you may need to show them how to hold it safely and where to press the button.  I let Neva use my DSLR and set all the settings for her so she would only need to look through the view finder and press the button. If they are using your i-phone make sure you show them how to touch the screen to focus on your face, or what part of the photo they would like to have be to focus.

Let them Direct the shoot:

Part of the fun of this session is really letting them take the lead.  I picked the room and spot for us all to sit but told Neva she needed to tell me what to do.  To start I would ask her do you want me to look happy? or surprised? She then got the hang of it and I just let her take control.  She thought it was hilarious and great fun.

Break into groups:

Having Neva learn how to take some pretty fabulous photos also means Joe and I got in front of the camera together; with Neva’s direction on posing of course.

After snapping some of us Neva wanted to get in front of the camera so I was even able to snap some of Joe with the girls. Allow the kids to direct still even when they are in front of the camera. The result will be better photos because they will feel in control.

Make it Fun:

Put on some fun music clear the floor space.  Let you and the kids move around dance and pretend to be models.

So hand your kids your camera and let them lead you in a session. We laughed like crazy and now have amazing family photos as a result.
