Our Year Abroad: 5 Unforgettable Experiences

With our extra down time in the apartment over the last 50 odd days Joe and I have been having a lot of conversations about our family’s journey of the last year. Today I thought I’d share our five most unforgettable experiences from our year in Guatemala.

Hosting Family & Friends from the US

Being able to share Guatemala with family and friends visiting and sharing our life here with them has been a blast. Watching other people get to experience a place we love and seeing them discover the beauty was so enjoyable. Unfortunately a few of our final visitors weren’t able to come to experience this time with us which is devastating. However, when I look back on all the visitors we did have, they were some of our favorite moments of the year.

Day Trip to Sumpango

Last fall Joe and I spent the day traveling to a town about an hour away from Guatemala City called Sumpango. In Sumpango we were able to see the Gallery of local artist Enrique Cay as well as see the process for creating the giant kites for the festival that takes place on November 1st every year. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

I talk in much more detail on this amazing festival and have more photos of the process in a previous post.

Watching Neva & Adilia become bilingual

Our main goal of the year was for the girls to be fully immersed into the culture their father grew up in. With that we wanted them to learn Spanish and become a fully bilingual household. Listening to the change and confidence in their language skills during our time here has been absolutely incredible. Hearing them have full conversations in Spanish, play together in Spanish and know that they speak Spanish to their dad has been so rewarding.

Quality Family Time

The year hasn’t always been easy. This has been the most time we have all spent together without any real time apart but with that struggle has been amazing quality family time. Not just as our individual family unit but also with Joe’s family. A huge goal of this year was for our girls to get time with their family that lives here and we absolutely were able to check that box. The amount of time we were all able to spend together was truly special and something we will always remember.

Visiting Lago Atitlán

This kind of fits under the category of hosting family and friends, since we did go twice with visitors. But, the lake is so incredible it deserves a category of it’s own. The lake is one of my favorite places in the world. Filled with culture, set in the most picturesque backdrop, some of my most memorable moments from this past year happened while we were at the lake.

Thanks for taking this walk down memory lane with us. Hard to believe we only have a few more days left in this adventure.
